Programming languages are constantly evolving as IT technology advances.
Continuing to look at the rapidly changing IT environment and exploring trends related to the language of development is now a must. One good way to understand trends is to periodically check the rankings of programming languages.

Today, we will learn about the 2022 Programming Language Rankings by GitHub 2.0 and TIOBE Index, as well as the concepts and features of the top 5 developed languages based on the TIOBE Index ranking in September 2022.

2022 Programming Language Rankings

GitHut 2.0 Programming Language Rankings

GitHub 2.0 analyzes which languages are used in GitHub and reflects them in their programming language rankings. GitHub 2.0 divides these rankings into four categories: Push, PR (Pull Request), Stars, and Issues. Let’s take a look at what development language is typically used with Push and PR (Pull Request) features within GitHub.

Push Q1 2022 Rankings

GitHub’s Push is a feature that uploads what you’ve worked on to the GitHub server.
Let’s look at the rankings of frequently used development languages in the Push feature.

  1. Python
  2. java
  3. JavaScript
  4. c++
  5. PHP
  6. TypeScript
  7. C
  8. Go
  9. Shell
  10. Ruby

Pull Requests Q1 2022 Rankings

Pull Request is a request to receive and work on the GitHub server, and then reflect it in the original repository.
Let’s look at the rankings of frequently used development languages for the Pull Request feature.

  1. Python
  2. java
  3. JavaScript
  4. C++
  5. Go
  6. TypeScript
  7. PHP
  8. Ruby
  9. C
  10. C#

2022 TIOBE Programming Language Rankings

TIOBE is a company that inspects and manages software usability and the quality of source code. The TIOBE Index informs the popularity of developing languages. The programming language ranking is updated once a month.

The criteria for estimation are based on the frequency of searches on popular search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Amazon, and YouTube, as well as taking into account the usage of programming languages in software.

Exploring the Types of Key Programming Language

So far, we have examined the latest programming languages based on GitHub 2.0 and TIOBE Index websites to identify the major languages that align with the current trends.

Let’s explore the concepts and key features of programming languages, focusing on the Top 5 languages according to the TIOBE Index.

Basic Concepts of Programming Language

What is a programming language?

Programming language refers to a language that enables communication (instruction) between humans and computers, allowing the computer to perform tasks, commands, or operations desired by humans. In short, it’s a language to make computers do work.

Programming languages have the characteristic of allowing mechanical operations to be performed according to predefined rules and enabling the implementation of complex structures of data or programs. Additionally, they are variable over time in terms of usage and concepts, as they can change with the passage of time.

Classification Criteria for Programming Languages

There are more than 700 types of programming languages. Although the classification criteria vary, they are usually classified into low-grade and advanced languages according to which language, human or computer, it’s closest to. The closer it is to a machine language, the more it is classified as a “low-class language,” and the closer it is to a natural human language, the more it is classified as a “high-level language.”

Low-level languages include machine language and assembly language, with high-level languages encompassing most development languages excluding machine language and assembly language. For your reference, the next programming languages that will be introduced are all high-level languages.

Prominent Types of Programming Languages

C Language

Programming language, C language, C, development language, programming

C Language is a common operating system language that allows programs to be designed simply and is also a development language that serves as the base for other types of programming languages.

The advantage of C language is that it is compatible and portable with a variety of hardware and allows you to control your hardware efficiently. It also has the advantage of being concise and fast to execute.
However, unlike other languages, C language has direct control over system resources, so careful attention must be paid to programming.

C++

C++, C#, programming language

Mainly used in games and graphics, the C++ language is a development language that has emerged to compensate for the shortcomings of the C language. The advantage of C++ is that it is the most supported computer programming language and is flexible. However, if you are inexperienced with it, there might be many bugs.

C#

C#, Seashop, Programming Language

C# language is more advanced than C++, combining the features of C++ and Java, making it more similar to Java than C language. C# language is an object-oriented language developed by Microsoft and is used by most programs running with Windows.

C# language combines the advantages of existing languages and has several strengths. Among its features, C# language’s garbage collector automatically removes unused objects when memory is scarce. However, C# language doesn’t have a high market share, so there is not a high demand for it as a development language.

Java

Java, java, programming language, development language, coding language

Java language is primarily used by developers in the industry who develop smartphone apps since previously composed code can be used on almost any device and platform. Since most government-provided sites are developed in Java, it’s the most commonly used programming language in Korea. It can be highly utilized if you work in related industries.

The advantages of Java language include its ease of coding and the ability to run on various platforms. It also can provide robust debugging, which is good for security.
However, Java language has limitations such as slow execution speed and not being particularly well-suited for backup tasks.

Python

Python language is closer to natural language than machine language, making it versatile for various applications such as website and service development, as well as data analysis.

Python language has the advantage of having the most concise syntax, allowing the execution of program algorithms based on behavior. Additionally, in web development, Python allows for minimal workload since tasks can be accomplished solely with Python.

However, Python language has limitations such as slower speed compared to other languages, and applications developed with Python consume a lot of memory.
