Many people have already used ChatGPT or OpenAI API services. Chat GPT is now being used everywhere, making it more difficult not to come across Chat GPT in everyday life. Many office workers increase their work productivity with ChatGPT, and many companies are launching various services using APIs.
OpenAI, which designed ChatGPT, launched ChatGPT 3.5 in November 2022 and the latest language model GPT-4 in March 2023, just four months later. In this module, we will summarize what the much discussed ChatGPT is, and take some time to become familiar with it.
What is ChatGPT?
First, let’s find out what exactly ChatGPT is. GPT stands for “Generative Pre-trained Transfomer” and is a machine learning technology that processes natural language. ChatGPT can be defined as an AI chatbot that combines chat functions with machine learning-based natural language processing. ChatGPT specifically is a kind of language model that does the job of automatically completing words, assisting in answering questions, and constructing articles, codes, etc.
Chatbots that were famous in Korea in the past include services such as Simsim and Luda. The existing chatbot service had limitations in that its answers felt machine-like or contextually awkward. However, since the advent of ChatGPT, the image of chatbots has changed completely. This is because ChatGPT surprises people by giving sophisticated answers that make them think there could possibly be a real person behind the chatbot. For reference, the number after ChatGPT (ChatGPT 3.5, ChatGPT 4) is the version name, and the higher the number, the more recently it has been released.

Who created ChatGPT?
The chatbot called ChatGPT was created by “OpenAI.” Tesla CEO Elon Musk was once one of the founders of OpenAI. OpenAI has also released “Dalle2,” an AI that generates pictures, and “Whisper,” an automatic voice recognition system.
Why is ChatGPT so hot right now?
ChatGPT has also brought about a change in the search engine market. The development in the field of AI can be especially felt in Microsoft Bing’s ChatGPT partnered searched environment.Bing’s new environment consists of two parts: a part that offers search functionality and a new chat interface, that allows you to ask free-form questions.
The image above is Bing’s homepage screen. When a user makes a search on a typical search engine, search results based on the searched query appear. In the case of Bing with ChatGPT functionality, search results are also provided through the new ‘Bing chat’ interface on the right.
Feel free to ask questions in this new interface to see the differing results. The ChatGPT-assisted Bing search engine provides search results that collect and reconstruct information according to the user’s search intention. Users benefit greatly from having well-organized data because ChatGPT can streamline scattered information for easy access. Because of these advantages, Bing’s share in the search engine market is expected to further grow. Content creators will also strive to produce higher quality content to climb ChatGPT search rankings.
And ChatGPT has set a global record when it comes to user interactions. ChatGPT secured one million users in just five days. Considering that it took 3.5 years for Netflix, 2.5 months for Instagram, and 74 days for the iPhone to secure 1 million users, it can be said that ChatGPT has achieved this milestone in a very short period of time.
Performance of ChatGPT
ChatGPT passed the MBA degree, the U.S. Certified Public Accountant exam (AICPA), and the U.S. Bar Exam. Especially the recently updated ChatGPT 4 boasts exceptional performance. ChatGPT 4 achieved a top 10 ranking out of 100 in the U.S. Bar Exam, and it secured the 7th position in the Reading section and 11th in the Math section of the SAT. While ChatGPT 3.5 scored in the lower 10% in professional exams, ChatGPT 4, released just four months later, achieved performance within the top 10%, indicating a significant improvement.
This is not the only improvement Chat GPT 4 has shown. The ability to infer images has also been greatly improved. You can give it pictures of medicines and it well tell you their ingredients and usage. In addition, ChatGPT 3.5’s “Hallucination Phenomenon” (a phenomenon in which false answers are presented as true), has also been greatly reduced. The chances of responding to banned content requests are 82% less likely, while the percentage of responding based on facts is 40% higher than in the previous model. On top of that, while ChatGPT 3.5 was able to analyze 3,000 words of text, ChatGPT 4 has received great attention because it was observed to analyze more than 25,000 words at once. While there are still limitations in its accuracy, future developments are drawing attention as rapidly as they arise.
How to use and leverage ChatGPT
Even if you’re familiar with ChatGPT 3.5, ChatGPT 4 concepts, what’s more important is knowing how to use the technology. ChatGPT usage has become so essential that it is now said that “only the ones who know how to ask the right questions will survive.” If you think about the essence of what ChatGPT is, you can easily glean how to use ChatGPT. You can think of ChatGPT as a “foreign intern who reads and organizes all information uploaded to the Internet until 2021” to imagine the possibilities of its usage. For example, you can use ChatGPT instead of searching to get more specific data that informs your work.
Basic Principles of ChatGPT Responses
In order to know how to use ChatGPT properly, you need to understand the basic principles of how ChatGPT responds to queries. The original job of a language model is to anticipate the words that will come later. Humans grasp the relation between words when interpreting language, but artificial intelligence has not caught up with us yet. However, in ChatGPT’s case it calculates this relation by assigning attention weights to the inputted words. This is called the Attention Mechanism. ChatGPT uses the Attention Mechanism as its guiding principle for answering queries. It calculates the weight of all the words in the sentence you enter and creates an answer by generating a sentence with words similar to the calculated weight.

Proper usage of ChatGPT
If you go to the ChatGPT site and sign up, you can use the ChatGPT 3.5 version for free, and ChatGPT 4 is available with a monthly payment of $20. Now let’s examine how you can utilize ChatGPT properly.
1. Inquire in English more than in Korean
This is the most important part of using ChatGPT. If you want to use ChatGPT properly, it is better to ask questions in English rather than in Korean. You have to ask questions in English to improve the quality of your answers and speed up response times. It also changes how much ChatGPT remembers the conversation. ChatGPT is known to remember about 4,000 tokens of conversation, and gradually forget past conversations when the sum of tokens is exceeded. It is therefore more efficient to ask questions in English because Hangul uses 4 times more in tokens than English does. If it’s difficult to ask questions in English, please refer to the Prompt Genie Chrome extension app to automatically translate questions and answers.
2. Limit yourself to one topic per conversation session
Access the ChatGPT dialog page to open a new chatting box (session) and start a conversation. When you start the dialog, the sessions are listed on the left. As I mentioned earlier, you can use 4,000 tokens within the chat. When you visit again, it remembers the previous conversation, so it’s better to talk about only one topic in a chat window.
3. Ask simple and concise questions
ChatGPT is designed to measure the attention weight between words when giving answers. Therefore, if there are too many unnecessary words, a discrepancy in weight may cause you to not get the answers you want. It is important to ask questions as simply and concisely as possible.
ex)
- Can you explain quantum mechanics so easily and concisely that an 8-year-old could understand it? (X)
- Explain quantum mechanics to an eight-year-old. (O)
4. Ask questions as commands.
When you ask questions to ChatGPT, it is recommended to ask with commands rather than requests. English can be seen as a structure that starts with a verb and ends with an object.
ex)
- Will the artist as we know it disappear because of Dalle2? (X)
- Please write about whether the artist as we know it will disappear because of Dalle2. (O)
5. Ask specific questions.
To align attention weights with the answers you want, we recommend that you provide specific information (background, purpose, context, data, etc.). This is because the more specifics you provide, the less room there is for ChatGPT to make arbitrary decisions.
ex)
- Write me a poem. (X)
- Write a short poem about quantum mechanics in Walt Whitman’s style, focusing on the story of Albert Einstein. (O)
6. Enter an example of the desired outcome.
If you have a desired answer format, it is recommended that you provide an example of the result.
ex)
- Write about 10 scientists who have studied quantum mechanics. (X)
- Please write a YouTube long-form script introducing 10 scientists who have studied quantum mechanics. (O)
How to Use ChatGPT
Now that you’ve learned how to use ChatGPT as described above, it’s time to make efficient use of ChatGPT. Let’s explore the various ways in which ChatGPT can be utilized.
1. Increasing work efficiency
Free yourself of tasks like planning, emailing, summaries, brainstorming, and content creation by delegating them to ChatGPT. It can also help you do repetitive or cumbersome tasks, such as summary PowerPoints or spreadsheet organization, thus increasing your productivity.
2. Creating and improving code.
You can also develop code with ChatGPT. If you provide guidelines for your desired code, it will write it for you accordingly. Translation between languages such as Python and C language is also possible.
3. Answering Questions
You can ask questions that arise from your day-to-day and get quick answers. You can use it to study a foreign language or ask questions about specialized fields such as law and medicine. In fact, in a recent experiment, Chat GPT was able to pass the U.S. medical exam.
