Competitions aimed at discovering talented developers are being held across the nation. Amidst the plethora of development competitions, the Ellice Code Challenge, dedicated solely to ‘backend engineers’, has successfully concluded.

I am pleased to announce the completion of the Ellice Code Challenge, a competition dedicated solely to ‘backend engineers,’ amidst a flood of development competitions held nationwide.

Over 700 backend and full-stack developers in employment participated in this challenge. This competition stood out as it went beyond mere coding skills, presenting missions that a ‘backend’ developer might tackle in real-world scenarios, thus eliciting creative solutions.

Online preliminaries conducted on the AI education practice platform, Ellice LXP

The online preliminary rounds were conducted via the AI training practice platform, Ellice LXP, from November 25 to December 4. Participants could choose their testing times within this week-long period, resulting in a high turnout from working professionals.

The preliminary questions were designed to test the developers’ logical thinking, analytical skills, and problem-solving abilities through a total of five questions covering algorithm tests and technical proficiency verification. Since Ellice LXP allows for automatic grading, all participants were able to check their results in real-time, and the score compilation and announcement of results proceeded smoothly.

Every challenge matters! ‘Live Coding Explanation Session’

An online live coding explanation session was held for all participants, regardless of their advancement to the finals, to ensure a meaningful challenge experience.

This session was conducted by Ellice content developers who directly coded and solved problems in real-time within the LXP’s practice environment. Over 60 participants actively engaged through the live chat to resolve their queries, making it a meaningful and satisfying experience.

Execution of practical, reality-based missions

It was a challenge that involved performing practical, real-world missions instead of typical algorithm problems found in usual competitions, which many working participants found to be special and intriguing. In fact, the highest scorer, current developer Lee Hyun-seop, commented, “There have been many competitions focused on solving algorithm problems, but this is the first time I’ve seen a competition centered around backend topics. Although the problems were challenging, the detailed environment made them feel like issues that could actually arise during work.”

The offline finals that maximized engagement

The final round took place at ElliceLab, a space where Ellice education participants learn. All finalists used the devices set up in the ElliceLab programming zone to carry out their missions in the Ellice LXP environment.

The finals consisted of an opening ceremony, the main competition, an awards and closing ceremony, and a networking event, with the main competition lasting three hours.

Due to real-time automatic scoring, the rankings changed up until the last minute, resulting in a competition filled with thrill and tension throughout.

The award ceremony and networking event were doubly joyful, reflecting the intensity of the competition.

An award ceremony was held for the top 20 challengers in the finals. The total prize money was an impressive 20 million won, with Ellice’s CTO Park Jeong-guk and backend lead Kim Chang-hyun participating in the awards presentation.

The participation rate for the networking session, organized to promote ‘development culture and the developer ecosystem,’ was 100%. High participation was achieved as all finalists were briefed beforehand on the importance of networking and tips for effective networking, making it a meaningful event.

The finals provided an opportunity for skilled developers to share their experiences and knowledge, continue opportunities for collaboration, and enjoy a time of growth and development.

The annual Ellice Code Challenge is planned to expand its scope to include frontend, application, and ML operations.

The successful conclusion of this code challenge targeted solely at backend engineers was made possible thanks to platforms and development environments such as ElliceLXP and ElliceTEST, along with operational expertise.
