The People Team tells us all about hiring Elice

Elice

6/20/2022

“What kind of person do you want at Elice?”

This is a question that many people who are interested in joining Elice often ask. We know you have a lot of questions about what’s important when applying for a job at Elice, how the hiring process works, and more. So we’ve put together a list of frequently asked questions specifically about hiring at Elice. Maeun and Hye-ri from the People team answered all of your questions in detail. If you’re interested in joining Elice, take note!

Q. Please introduce yourself.

Kyul Hi. I’m Kyul Sohn, a recruiter.
Hyeri Hello. I’m Hye-ri Lee, a recruiter in the Elice People team.

What kind of company is Elice?

Q. We’ve collected a variety of questions about working at Elice. The first question is one that many of you have asked: Is Elice an education company?

Kyul Yes, we do have a lot of people asking if we are an education company, and while most of our business and revenue is in education, I think it’s better to think of us as a digital transformation company. We provide data analytics and artificial intelligence training to employees of companies, and we’re moving into the business of providing consulting for higher-level modeling, or even providing data centers. Through these businesses, we will help various companies, including those in traditional industries, to run their businesses in an efficient and innovative way!

Q. Do I need to be good at coding to join Elice?”

Hyeri This is a question I was also curious about before joining the company. Since Elice is a tech company, it’s good if you have a strong interest in technology. However, even if you don’t know how to code, we welcome those who have a strong desire to learn and grow after joining the company! In my case, I was also a nerd and took a coding class for the first time when I joined Elice. (Laughs) However, I definitely developed a natural interest in coding while working at Elice, so I’m participating in the ‘Automating Work with Python’ study that Elice is running.

I’m curious about the Elice application process.

Q. What should I keep in mind when applying?

Kyul There are three things I would like to mention. First of all, it is better to send documents as PDF files rather than Word or Hangul files if possible. Secondly, please be careful not to write your salary on your resume. You can keep your salary confidential on your resume and discuss it later when discussing treatment. Lastly, when writing about your job duties, some people write the job description as it is, or simply list it, but it’s better to quantify your contributions so that we can see what you’ve accomplished.

Q. How does the selection process work?

Hyeri We basically go through documents, interviews, and mini-projects. If you pass the mini-project, you can proceed directly to the job interview, and if you are an experienced employee, you can proceed to the job interview after reference check.

Front-end developers will be screened, have an algorithm test, and after the first round of interviews, we will ask for a mini-project. You will then have a 3-hour technical interview based on the project. For backend developers, you’ll be asked to complete a mini-project right after the screening, and then have a 1-hour technical interview based on your work. Additionally, for content engineer (creator) positions on the Education team, we may request a review interview on a case-by-case basis after the mini-project review.

Q. How does the interview work?

Hyeri The first round of interviews for front-end developers and technical interviews for back-end developers are conducted via video. All other positions are conducted in person. However, if you are unable to attend in person due to your schedule or distance, we may conduct a video interview.

Kyul Last but not least, there’s something special about Elice interviews. When Elice conducts a video or in-person interview, she records it because she only wants to conduct one interview. Usually, we have at least two interviews, and we’ve had candidates complain about the difficulty of doing that, so we only do one interview, and then the decision makers can watch the video and make a decision together. The video is never used for any other purpose, so you don’t have to worry about any other issues.

Q. How will I be notified of the screening results?

Hyeri All results will be notified via email, so we ask that you keep your email notifications turned on during the selection process so you don’t miss any notifications.

Q. What is the process after the final selection?

Hyeri After you’ve been accepted, we’ll discuss treatment and start date and send you a final offer. If you accept the offer, we’ll send you an induction guide and invite you to join Slack and Notion, so you can explore the history of Elsevier until your start date.

Q. Do you hire new hires or interns?

Hyeri Yes, we are hiring not only new graduates and interns, but also recruitment-linked on-the-job training. In the case of on-the-job training, everyone is thinking of converting to a full-time job, so we give preference to those who can work immediately after graduation.

Q. How does the mini-project work?

Hyeri The mini-projects have a minimum duration of 2 days and a maximum of 4 days, depending on the difficulty level. The topic of the mini-project is personalized as much as possible based on the applicant’s experience to verify the competencies expected at Elice.

Kyul We don’t use your work to validate your skills, but if you’re good enough that we want to implement your idea, we’ll hire you right away, because it’s in our best interest, and the mini-project sets up the project in a way that prevents you from plagiarizing ideas in the first place. For designer assignments, we’ll give you a brand other than Elice, or for marketer assignments, we’ll give you an assignment from a campaign that’s already ended.

Q. Can I reapply if I’ve been rejected before?”

Hyeri Yes, you can, but make sure that your reapplication adds to and complements your previous resume, and if you’re applying for a different position than the first time, make sure that your motivation for applying for that position is clear.

Q. How do I go about reference checks?

Kyul We use a reference checking platform that makes it easy for you to ask people to write references for you, and it’s a secure service that’s only visible to the people at the company you’ve agreed to. The more people you can get to write about you - your boss, your coworkers, your successor - the better.

Q. What are the types of things that you would definitely eliminate from a paper:?

Kyul We try to make sure that everyone who applies is qualified, but the only time we reject a candidate is when we don’t understand why they’re applying for the position. For example, let’s say you’re a 5-year recruiter and you’ve applied for a Business Development Representative position. Normally, you’d describe your experience in a results-oriented way, but in this case, your resume should be different. You should describe why you want to change roles, why business development, and what the intersection of recruiting and business development is. We’ll talk more about this in the interview, but it’s important to have a selling point even at the paper stage.

Elice helping members grow

Q. Many people are interested in joining Elice. What kind of company is Elice from the perspective of the People Team?

Kyul It’s a young, energetic, and warm company. Despite the young age of our team, we don’t have any “young nerds.” We have a flat organizational culture, so there’s no bossiness or authoritarian behavior - we call our CEOs by their first names! And there’s always a sense of energy because both the company and our people are hungry for growth. In fact, we’re not satisfied with what we accomplished in 2021, and we’re looking to make even bigger jumps this year. Our Elysers are also hungry for growth and want to keep pushing themselves.

But you might be worried that this focus on growth might lead to more competition between employees. While she’s fiercely driven forward, she doesn’t use internal competition as a driving force - she recognizes that we all benefit from each other being the best we can be in our respective positions! Elice has a culture of respect for each other’s diversity.

Q. The address is listed as Daejeon, where exactly is the office located?

Hyeri Our current office is located right in front of Exit 3 of Seolleung Station. In addition, we have Elice training centers in Seongsu-dong, Seoul and Busan, and we are constantly expanding our offices as we are growing rapidly. The reason why the address is in Daejeon is because the three founders started the company while they were in their doctoral programs, so it is registered as a KAIST campus. We are planning to move the headquarters address in the future.

Q. Do you have a culture that helps employees grow?

Hyeri The education team organizes and hosts study sessions, and of course, we can take all of Elice’ lectures for free. We also generously support other trainings to strengthen our job competencies, and we can use the Kyobo Bookstore e-library for free.

Q. What is the age range of Elice employees?

Kyul It’s relatively young, but we’ve been mostly 20-somethings and early 30-somethings, but we’ve recently started hiring more senior-level people, so we’re seeing more 40-somethings and older. We’re trying to expand our diversity, and it’s great to see people of all ages joining us!

Q. What do interns do?

Hyeri When you join us as an intern, we give you almost the same work as a full-time employee, so you get a lot of responsibility and experience. I’ve heard that at other companies, interns are just responsible for paperwork, but that’s not the case at Elice. We expect everyone to take responsibility for their own work as a project owner, so you’ll get to work on all aspects of the business process, and I think you’ll learn and grow a lot.

Kyul There is a video on the Elice Coding YouTube channel called “What Do Elice Interns Do?” where you can see what an Elice intern does. If you’re curious about what an intern does, you should definitely watch it! (Go to video)

From iPads to team activities, a welfare story

Q. What’s the most impressive welfare program that the People Team thinks about?

Kyul I think it’s the ‘iPad for all employees’ that doesn’t exist in other companies, and many people actually utilize the iPad a lot in their work.
Hyeri I actually used my iPad to watch videos and read content for this interview. (Laughs) I also like being able to read Kyobo e-books on my iPad during my commute.

Q. How are team activities, one of the Elice welfare programs, conducted?

Hyeri Activities is a monthly team reimbursement to do an activity of your choice, and you’re free to do whatever you want with your teammates. Our People team went camping with the Finance team last month. (Laughs.) Other times, we’ve seen musicals, gone bowling, or taken classes. It’s also nice to have a fancy meal with the team to get in the mood!

Q. What’s the last thing you’d like to say?

Kyul We’re actively hiring for all roles at Elice right now. Developers, training planning and operations, marketing, design, HR, and even finance positions are all open and welcome. Please apply!
Hyeri We are hiring a lot of entry-level positions as well as experienced positions. Please come to the Elice Careers website, take a look around, and apply. Come to Elice~!
