Bangkok University and Sripatum University:
How a No-Code Autograder is Changing the Game Development Teaching
“We can’t imagine returning to a time before Elice LXP.”
Professors in the Game and Interactive Media Program in Thailand encountered significant challenges while teaching a large number of students in an offline setting. Managing assignment submissions and ensuring students kept pace with coursework was difficult. Despite lacking experience with online learning management system (LMS) or hands-on learning platforms, they decided to implement Elice LXP for the Data Structures and Algorithms course, which serves over 500 students. This case study explores how these challenges were addressed, showcasing a transformative shift toward innovative learning methods through insights from professors’ testimonies and student surveys.
Auto-Grading and Immediate Feedback: Enhancing Teaching Efficiency
Elice LXP provides various features designed to save professors’ time and simplify their tasks. A professor teaching C# and Unity at two universities in Bangkok utilized Elice LXP to create programming exercises for lectures, assignment submissions, and midterm/final assessments. Elice LXP enables students to complete and submit programming exercises on the platform, allowing professors to swiftly generate practical class materials, assignments, and assessment questions. Grading assignments for hundreds of students can be burdensome, but Elice LXP’s Auto-grading feature streamlines this process, enabling effortless grading of programming assignments. With options ranging from the straightforward STDIO (standard input/output) method to code-based graders that facilitate precise evaluations, even for non-Python experts, the grading process becomes significantly more efficient.
Additionally, Elice LXP’s AI-powered dashboard provides a comprehensive overview of student progress. Increasing class sizes makes it more challenging to track individual learning outcomes and identify students who are falling behind. The AI dashboard visualizes data such as completion rates, score distribution, exercise submissions, and even the time spent programming, allowing professors to easily monitor student progress. If a student needs help, professors can enter the Tutoring mode to review the student’s code environment and provide personalized feedback.
By streamlining grading and providing valuable insights, these features significantly improve both teaching efficiency and student engagement. As one professor remarked, “We can’t imagine returning to a time before Elice LXP. The auto-grading and assessment feature has significantly improved my ability to assess students.” This testimonial not only highlights the impact of these innovations but also emphasizes their vital role in enhancing contemporary educational practices.
AI Helpy: An AI Assistant for Student Support
A survey of over 120 Thai students revealed that 80% found the platform “easy to use, with the ability to instantly run code and check results.”
Elice LXP’s Command Line Interface (CLI) environment allows students to practice programming without requiring additional installations or external platform integrations. They can easily run and submit their code to receive immediate grading results, making the learning process more efficient and user-friendly.
Students also praised AI Helpy for providing quick answers directly within the platform. One student remarked, “AI helps explain answers, and you can ask questions directly in the platform without having to open ChatGPT.”
AI Helpy automatically recognizes and interprets all text within the platform, including the problem description and student code. When a student asks, “What’s wrong with this part of my code?”, AI Helpy quickly examines the student’s code, clarifying the question’s intent, pinpointing specific issues, and proposing refactoring options. Through clear explanations and constructive feedback, AI Helpy empowers students to understand their mistakes and learn from them effectively.
Within one semester for 500 students, there was remarkable engagement, with a completion rate exceeding 70%, approximately 180,000 code runs and submissions, and over 8,000 queries directed to AI Helpy. This high level of interaction highlights the platform’s effectiveness in engaging students and enhancing their learning experience with AI-driven tools.
Beyond the Classroom, Beyond the Borders
In traditional offline classes, learning was restricted to the classroom environment. Once students left, professors could no longer provide immediate feedback, and accessing course materials became challenging, leading to discontinuities in learning. In contrast, the introduction of a hybrid on/offline learning approach with Elice LXP has effectively addressed these temporal and spatial limitations. Learning that once occurred solely in the classroom can now continue beyond the classroom, providing continuous opportunities for knowledge acquisition.
This implementation marks the first operational use of Elice LXP in Thailand. Through this adoption, we observed that the platform functions seamlessly in Thai, further enhancing Elice’s global reach after successful implementations in the Singapore and Vietnam regions.
By embracing Elice LXP, the professors in Thailand have transcended the limitations of traditional education, creating a more flexible and enriched learning environment. This transition is a significant step towards reimagining the future of education.
If you’re ready to move beyond the constraints of conventional education and offer a more adaptable learning experience, consider adopting Elice LXP.
